The Global Distribution EMEA department is responsible for managing the distribution to end customers in the EMEA region, delivering to over 8,000 customers (e.g. hospitals, pharmacies) via a network of logistics and transport service providers and Amgen-owned warehouses.

Internship project description – Best distribution model for rare disease pharma – special ‘white glove’ service vs mainstream distribution

Amgen has recently acquired a new company specializing in the treatment of rare diseases. The patients for the products are limited in volume, but the impact of the medicine on their health is significant, meaning it is critical that all deliveries are on time and in full. The final mile distribution model of this product has been integrated 100% into Amgen’s current network, which is built for high volume (400k+shipments in Europe) compliant delivery. The major question facing Amgen’s Global Distribution team in EMEA is to understand whether the decision to integrate the new company into our existing Distribution model was the right one, and if not, what model should be applied.

The individual who takes on this assignment will have the opportunity to:

  • Consider what is the best method to deliver the product to patients considering the needs of this new product class
  • Examine and (re)design a whole new type of distribution model for Amgen
  • Work with external providers and internal stakeholders to benchmark processes, identify potential gaps, and contribute to an enhanced patient experience.
