Welcome to our team the Discovery and Technology (D&T) department is an essential hub in our organization. This department conducts proof – of – concept research into novel vaccine technologies and therapies and plays a key role in interacting with the R&D community to identify and evaluate potential new leads relevant to Animal Health. The D&T organization consists of cross-linked teams responsible for development research and early development of vaccines and therapies against viral-, bacterial- and parasitological diseases. Within the multidisciplinary teams, specialist in the fields of virology, bacteriology, antigen discovery, vaccine formulation, molecular biology, immunology, assay development and cell biology work together.

Your internship assignment

As an intern, you will be responsible for adapting Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) with the main focus on specific high-sensitivity enzymatic reporter unlocking (SHERLOCK) to contribute in establishing a multiplexed, portable and ultra-sensitive detection of RNA and DNA platform by enhancing it’s versatility and applicability to animal health as a marker diagnostic tool. You will learn how to set-up SHERLOCK assays with recombinase-mediated polymerase pre-amplification of DNA or RNA and subsequent Cas13- or Cas12-mediated detection via fluorescence and colorimetric readouts.

Your responsibilities

  • Scan the literature and design DNA guides for efficient CRISPR RNA/DNA and isothermal amplification primers

  • Test the system for specificity and accuracy using samples of various complexity and/or field  samples.

  • Explore the conditions multiplex and quantitative SHERLOCK detection assays

  • Providing a fresh perspective within the department: your opinion matters.

The described tasks form the basic package and will often be performed independently after a proper training and learning period. These tasks may be supplemented with other projects and/or tasks on your own initiative or at the request of the organization.

What is required

  • A last year BSc or a MSc student in a biology related field.

  • You are familiar with molecular biology techniques

  • You are enthusiastic about finding creative solutions to real biological problems.

  • You are searching for an internship where you have the freedom to take initiative

  • You are fluent in English

  • You are available for 5 days a week for a period of 6 to 9 months
