The Discovery & Technology (D&T) department is an essential hub in our organization. This department is focused on the early stage pipeline by evaluating novel technologies to develop novel products. The team consists of roughly 40 employees, all of whom have extensive knowledge and experience in molecular biology, virology, microbiology, immunology, formulation and assay development. The team works closely with other departments within the company to achieve the stated goals.

Your internship assignment:

Currently, a cross-departmental project (D&T and Biotechnology Solutions (BTS) departments) is focusing on the development of an established recombinant antibody workflow that ultimately creates an alternative procedure for the generation of monoclonal antibodies for replacing mice immunization activities which are currently the standard procedure. The success rate for identification of B cell clones that secrete antigen-specific immunoglobulins with high affinity depends however largely on optimized procedures for the screening and isolation of antigen-specific B-lymphocyte subsets from blood of the respective host species.

The focus of this internship project will be on developing procedures for isolation of antigen-specific bovine B cell clones derived from whole blood of immunized cattle by means of multi-color flow cytometry-based phenotyping and sorting procedures. Quality of B-cell clone produced antibodies will be evaluated using various analytical methodologies and compared against existing hybridoma-derived monoclonal antibodies.

Your responsibilities

• Primary cell isolation and flow cytometry technologies

• ELISA and Octet analyses

• Cell culture and recombinant protein expression/purification

• Providing a fresh perspective within the department: your opinion matters

The described tasks form the basic package and will often be performed independently after a proper training and learning period. These tasks may be supplemented with other projects and/or tasks on your own initiative or at the request of the organization.

What is required

• A fourth-year Bachelor student (Applied sciences) or Master student immunology/biochemistry

• You are familiar with basic cell biology, cellular/molecular immunology and can apply biological techniques. Preferably you have completed at least one internship before.

• You are enthusiastic about working on vaccine development, have a professional attitude, are enthusiastic, eager to learn new techniques and challenged to do an internship in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment.

• You are searching for an internship where you may have the freedom to take initiative

• You are fluent in Dutch or English; preferentially both

• You are available for a period of 6-9 months for 5 days a week.
