We are looking for a motivated 4th year Bachelor of Science or a Master of Science student with a background in Cell Biology and Genetics . Welcome to our team

The Department of Discovery and Technology, part of the Global Research & Development (R&D) group of our Animal Health Division, is an essential hub in our organization. This department is focused on (1) novel technologies for isolation, characterization and culturing of newly discovered pathogens that infect animals and possibly humans (zoonoses), (2) novel approaches towards efficacious vaccine development against existing and newly discovered pathogens and (3) development of new technologies to culture pathogens for vaccine production . The team consists of about 25 employees, all of whom have extensive knowledge and experience in different disciplines, including (Molecular) Virology, Immunology, Chemistry, Assay Development, Bacteriology and Cell Biology . The team works closely with other departments within the company to achieve the stated goals.

Your internship assignment:

As an intern, you will work on a project to advance our vaccine production technology by increasing production yields in cell culture and improving large-scale culture characteristics. This requires in-depth knowledge about the biology of both the cell and the virus.

Your responsibilities

•             Improvement of cell lines to be used for vaccine development.

•             Achieve this by either introduction of a transgene that enhances virus replication, or targeted functional inactivation of genes that negatively affect virus replication.

•             Learn and apply cell culture techniques, techniques for cryo-preservation, immune-fluorescence, and flow cytometry. This will be combined with molecular biology techniques such as (q)PCR, transfection, construct design, Lentivirus infection and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing.

•             Learn and apply a variety of biological assays such as virus titration.

•             Providing a fresh perspective within the department: your opinion matters.

The described tasks form the basic package and will often be performed independently after a proper training and learning period. These tasks may be supplemented with other projects and/or tasks on your own initiative or at the request of the organization.

What is required:

A fourth-year HBO (BSc) / university student MSc (Molecular) Cell Biology, Virology, Biochemistry or equivalent

•             You are familiar with basic cell biology / molecular biology / virology / techniques, you have completed at least one previous internship.

•             You are enthusiastic about working on vaccine development, have a professional attitude, are enthusiastic, eager to learn new techniques and challenged to do an internship in a dynamic complex environment.

•             You are searching for an internship where you have the freedom to take initiative

•             You are fluent in Dutch or English

•             You are available 5 days per week for a period of 6 months, starting in September / October 2024.
